David Blau could have been a rock star. But instead he went pre-med. Raised in the suburbs of Detroit Rock City, he was surrounded by phenomenal musicians, but he wanted the sun. After several years at UCLA he decided he didn’t want to be a physician. He grew his hair long, played gigs on the Sunset Strip, built his own recording studio in Culver City, and composed and produced music for television commercials. But Blau grew tired of getting ripped off, so he pulled his hair back and threw on a suit. Blau became a lawyer.
HW: “So, you were born in Detroit?”
ATTORNEY DAVID BLAU: “I was born in the suburbs of Detroit. I grew up there. My dad is a physician, now retired. He owned his own business, which was good modeling for me.”
HW: “Is that where you got your idea for being an entrepreneur?”
ATTY. BLAU: “Well, there were a couple things in my life. One was having that modeling. Also, my mom – in my formidable years – went back to school and earned her Ph.D. as a psychologist and now she is a doctoral professor. My mom is a force of nature. She married my dad when he was in med school. They didn’t have any money, had three kids, and then my father was drafted and was gone for three or so years in Vietnam while my mother took care of us. When I was in high school, my mother was either in school, getting her doctorate or working as a professor and psychologist while my father was running his business. That was my modeling. My modeling was – you can do anything, but you have to do it. No one is going to give anything to you. You can’t wait until things happen to you. You have to make them happen.”
HW: “In high school, did you think you were going to be a musician? Is that where you thought you would be going?
ATTY. BLAU: “I wasn’t sure – in high school – what I was going to be. My parents told me a couple of things… They said I could do whatever I wanted as long as I applied myself, and I believed that. With the exception of, I get nauseated sometimes when I’m spun around, so I don’t think being an astronaut was in my future. But I really liked music and I was intrigued by the law.
HW: “How did that come about?”
ATTY. BLAU: “Well, I got myself into some trouble when I was younger – some snafus – and there was my father’s lawyer, who was this guy – I just remember him as being eight feet tall. In truth he was about 6’6; a rather scary looking huge man. He was my father’s lawyer, and I got in some trouble so I would see him from time to time and I was just always impressed by him, and how he took care of things. My father, who also respected this man immensely, once told me that after delivering an argument in court, he saw that this man was shaking. Anything that could make this mountain of a man shake sounded intense and cool to me.”
HW: “What kind of trouble did you get into? Did you steal a car? Graffiti?
ATTY. BLAU: “I never got into any serious trouble with the law but, you know, did my share of normal crazy teenage stuff.”
HW: “What’s your philosophy as a business owner and head of your firm?”
ATTY. BLAU: “My whole thing is – and I tell this to my employees – we work to live, we don’t live to work. Work hard, dedicate yourself, apply yourself, and keep your mind in the game. Slow and steady wins the race, and people are relying on us. What we do is very important. However, don’t let it destroy your life, because life takes precedence. Maintaining an appropriate perspective helps clients and my employees, and keeps me sane and even handed.”
HW: Now, you handle all kinds of transactional and litigation work – business and so forth – but you work with a lot of entertainers; is that fair to say?”
ATTY. BLAU: “Yes, I do any and all business transactional, and when necessary, go to court. But with entertainers – specifically musicians – I obviously have a very strong connection because I’m a musician and I even manage several artists. Remember, I became a lawyer primarily because I was always getting spun around in different directions when I was a working artist and producer and nobody would ever explain anything to me or give me a straight answer, or so it seemed. So, with my practice, I endeavor to make sure that things operate the way they’re supposed to, meaning fair and upfront. I try to give my clients all of the guidance, information and education that they need to make the decisions that are best for them.”
