If I hadn’t already known that Attorney Pius Joseph recently won a 6.2 million dollar jury verdict for his client, I would have never guessed it by sitting with this quiet spoken man in his Pasadena office. There wasn’t a hint of ego in his mannerisms; instead, I found an Attorney just as polite and humble as a Lawyer in his first year of practice. Of course, 20 years later, this has been part of Attorney Joseph’s charm and success.
ATTORNEY JOSEPH: “You have to treat everyone with respect. You start with y our client always, but the Judge, the Jury, the defendant, even opposing Counsel – regardless of how they behave toward you.”
HW: “What made you want to become an Attorney?”
ATT. JOSEPH: “Well, my father was a Lawyer back in India, and so was my Grandfather.”
HW: “Really? So, this was your destiny.”
ATT. JOSEPH: “You could say that, but I was always interested in the law. I was reading law books even at a young age.”
HW: “How young?”
ATT. JOSEPH: “Maybe 12 or 13… My daughter is only 16, but she helps me around the office.”
HW: “An attorney in the making?”
ATT. JOSEPH: “I don’t know. We’ll have to see. I want her to be happy in whatever she chooses.”
HW: “What’s really been the key to your success?”
ATT. JOSEPH: “I think it all starts with the case – I choose cases I really believe in, because I’m going to be investing a lot of time, energy and money in my client; it’s partnership of sorts. So, I have to have that solid foundation of trust between my client and myself.”
HW: “Why personal injury and not some other field of law.”
ATT. JOPSEPH: “I guess I’m attracted to helping the ‘Little Guy.’ People who have been taken advantage of in some way. Together we’ll go after the ‘Bad Guys’ and I’ll do my best to right their wrong; in law, punitive damages is the remedy for my clients, and I’ll get them as much as I can to ease their pain.”
HW: “Your tactics obviously work – six million dollars later.”
ATT. JOSEPH: “Well, I do a lot of preparation – that’s the key. You have to know your theories of law. You don’t win in court by being ‘emotionally convincing’, you win cases based on evidence, so I work very hard to prepare my cases.”
HW: “It sounds like you enjoy being in court.”
ATT. JOSEPH: “I do. I’m a trial lawyer; court is the forum where you really see justice at work.”
HW: “After 20 years as an Attorney, how do you stay fresh in court?”
ATT. JOSEPH: “I, first of all, have to stay current with the times. We live in a very visual world, so all my cases are prepared with a Power Point presentation because you have to keep the jury engaged, but mostly I think it’s my attitude: I’m a very positive person. In my experience I’ve learned that even in the face of apparent defeat, you can still prevail if you stay positive.”
HW: “Why should our readers choose you to represent them in a person injury case?”
ATT. JOSEPH: “If you believe in your case, and you’re honest with me, I’ll use all of my resources and do everything in my power to help you because, at the end of the day…I really love going after the ‘Bad Guys’…and winning.”
