SCHOMER
ELDER LAW ATTORNEY

SCOTT P. SCHOMER

“Stay Close To Your Loved Ones”

By Anthony Calderon

I’m pretty sure Attorney Scott Schomer is about as close to a human lie-detector as you’re ever going to find. This is a man who, before graduating from Law School, held a Double Major in Psychology and Philosophy -- he was reading Nietzsche in high school, where as “deep” as my friends and I were in 10th grade was quoting Yoda’s “There is no try, only do.”

He was a Counselor at a Drug Abuse Clinic where his job description was not only finding out the truth about you, but getting you to admit whether or not you have an addiction -- how hard is that to do? Tackling that great wall of “Denial.” I’m not an alcoholic, I just play one on T.V.

Attorney Schomer has now applied his sharp mind to the field of Elder Law; his Law Firm also handles probate, wills, trusts and conservatorships, but it’s in the area of Elder Abuse that Attorney Schomer is convinced that, in his words, he’s “stemming a problem on the rise.”

HW: “I read on your website that you recently won a jury verdict of 4.7 million dollars for a senior citizen -- a sweet old woman -- who had her house stolen from her by a corrupt Attorney. A victory like that...winning that money for her...that had to be the greatest feeling in the world.”

ATTORNEY SCOTT SCHOMER: “It really was, and that’s what makes my job so rewarding. We have to take care of our elderly -- remember, a person with dementia is as vulnerable as a six year old; you wouldn’t let children live in a house by themselves, but sometimes we allow our parents and our grandparents to stay alone in their house because they want to, but we have to take care of them.”

HW: “I know you appeared on Dr.Phil talking about this subject -- how was that experience?”

ATT. SCHOMER: “It makes me happy that people are having conversations about this problem, and obviously Dr.Phil can reach a very wide audience. We have to be involved in the lives of our family members -- we have to look for clues that something could be going on. Maybe they’re starting to receive a lot of mail from different mortgage companies; it could mean someone is trying to get them to sell their home.”

HW: “It must be hard seeing senior citizens being taken advantage of; how do you not let it get to you?”

ATT. SCHOMER: “My family. I have beautiful kids and a beautiful wife -- I really married an Angel. She’s very understanding and supportive of me. My family adds a lot of balance to my life.”

HW: “Now, you’ve even dabbled in my territory -- you were the Senior Vice President of an Entertainment company from 2001 through 2002. Do you miss the film business?”

ATT. SCHOMER: “It was definitely a lot of fun, but I have a lot of respect for the legal system. Every time I walk into Court I feel like I’m walking on hallowed ground.”

HW: “And you also work as a Judge.”

ATT. SCHOMER: “Well, Judge Pro Tempore, which means I help out when there’s an overflow of cases at the L.A. Municipal Court.”

HW: “Your website is very informative about different aspects of Elder Law, and answers many questions that the public may have, but to go back to your days as a Movie Studio VP, if you had to come up with a Log Line that captures the essence of this article, what would it be?”

ATT.SCHOMER: “Stay close to your loved ones.”
